Saigo Takamori

The most beloved hero of the Meiji Restoration in Japan: The life of Saigo Takamori and his legacy in Kagoshima

"Respect heaven and love people" -- Saigo Takamori was a man who lived his life by these words, caring about people and worrying about the future of the nation, without becoming obsessed with power.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Japanese history will have come across his name, and even today his spirit and achievements live on in Kagoshima, his hometown, as a source of pride for the people.

The beliefs of a man born into a low-ranking samurai family in Satsuma

Saigo Takamori was born into a low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture) in 1828. Although his family was by no means wealthy, he devoted himself to academics and martial arts from a young age and grew up in a community-based education system known as "Gochu education."

In the Gochu education, elders teach the younger ones manners and ideas, and through daily training they deepen bonds with their peers. Through this education, Saigo acquired the spirit of "self-discipline and consideration for others."

Meeting Shimazu Nariakira and the blossoming of his talent

Saigo's life was dramatically changed when he met Shimazu Nariakira, the lord of the Satsuma domain. Nariakira, who had an enlightened outlook and promoted the modernization of the domain, noticed Saigo's sincerity and drive and selected him as a close aide.

While being entrusted with political maneuvering in Edo and Kyoto, Saigo gradually developed a national perspective and grew into a politician who looked beyond his domain to Japan as a whole.

To the key figure in the Meiji Restoration

Although he was temporarily sidelined by the sudden death of Nariakira, Saigo returned to the forefront. He allied himself with the Choshu clan and became a driving force behind the overthrow of the shogunate, and was deeply involved in historical turning points such as the Restoration of Imperial Rule, the Restoration of Imperial Rule, and the Boshin War .

He then achieved the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which saw Japan move away from the feudal system and take its first step towards becoming a modern nation. Throughout this process, Saigo always cared about the people and never pursued power, which endeared him to many people.

Conflict with the Meiji government and the Satsuma Rebellion

After the Meiji Restoration, Saigo served as a key figure in the new government, but he became deeply concerned by the rapid Westernization and corruption of the bureaucracy. He eventually left the government and founded a private school in his hometown of Kagoshima, where he taught many young people about independence and bushido.

However, conflict with the government was unavoidable, and the Seinan War broke out in 1877. Saigo personally led his troops into battle, but committed suicide at Shiroyama.
He died at the age of 49. His final moments are still remembered today as those of a hero who fought for his people.
