Authentic Oshima Tsumugi

Tradition and pride embodied in each and every thread - Enter the world of authentic Oshima Tsumugi

Among the many textiles found throughout Japan, the name "Honba Oshima Tsumugi" is known worldwide. This textile, which has been passed down in Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, and mainland areas such as Minamikyushu City, is one of Japan's leading traditional crafts with a history of approximately 1,300 years.

The greatest feature of authentic Oshima Tsumugi is, without a doubt, the intricate kasuri patterns created by the "pre-dyeing" and "shimebata" processes. After the silk threads are dyed once with vegetable dyes, a pattern is designed in advance, and the designated areas are tied off so that they are not woven, and then dyed again, a process known as "shime-processing." By repeating this process several times, hundreds of thousands of woven points are created in a single bolt of fabric, creating a pattern that looks just like an intricate painting.

One of the dyes used is "mud dyeing," which uses a reddish-brown pigment extracted from a plant called "techi" (wheel plum), which is unique to Amami, and iron from muddy fields. This process of dyeing the fibers using only the power of nature is a traditional technique that relies on the intuition and experience of the artisan. The deep black-brown color, which cannot be reproduced with chemical dyes, exudes the dignity that is unique to Oshima Tsumugi.

Another appealing feature is its lightness and comfort. Woven from supple silk threads, the fabric is lighter than it looks, and it feels so soft against the skin that it is said to feel like a "second skin." It is also highly breathable and comfortable to wear for long periods of time, making it suitable for both formal occasions and everyday wear.

It was once said that it took more than six months to complete a single bolt of Oshima Tsumugi. Due to its rarity and high artistic value, it is also known as one of the "three great textiles of the world." In 2023, the "Authentic Oshima Tsumugi Museum" opened in Kagoshima City, providing tourists with more opportunities to experience the charm of this fabric through tours and hands-on exhibits.

Currently, collaborations with young creators are also underway, and new developments that blend Oshima Tsumugi into lifestyles are attracting attention, with Oshima Tsumugi fabric being used for bags, scarves, business card holders, and other accessories. By fusing tradition with innovation, Oshima Tsumugi continues to evolve as a craft that will be passed down to the next generation.

As a memento of your trip to Kagoshima, as a treat for yourself, or as a gift for someone special... Experiencing authentic Oshima Tsumugi is not just about "buying something," but an experience of "wearing the techniques and culture."

Come to Kagoshima and experience the skill and passion of the artisans that go into each and every strand of thread.
