Ebino Plateau-0

A highland paradise nestled in the foothills of Mount Kirishima - Experience the four seasons and nature at Ebino Plateau

Located near the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, Ebino Highlands , located at an altitude of approximately 1,200m in the Kirishima Mountain Range, is one of Kyushu's most naturally rich highland areas. With a history of volcanic activity and eruptions as its backdrop, the area is dotted with mountain routes such as Mount Io, the Pond Tour Nature Trail, Mount Karakunidake, and Mount Koshiki, making it a popular base for mountain climbing, trekking, and nature walks. It is also a valuable place for viewing rare vegetation, even within Japan, including pampas grasslands, Miyamakirishima azaleas, and wildflowers.

Because of its high altitude, Ebino Plateau is cool in the summer and is a great place to escape the heat. It also offers beautiful autumn leaves in the fall and frost and snow in the winter, making it a joy to visit in all seasons.

Attractions and highlights

1. A landscape that gives a sense of volcanic topography and geothermal activity

The Ebino Plateau region is dotted with volcanic formations, such as Mount Io, which was formed by volcanic activity since the Edo period. The fumaroles, geothermal steam, and rising volcanic gases give a sense of the power of nature. The scenery, combined with the changing topography of the plateau, and the balance of the flora and fauna, make for fascinating natural observations.

2. Rich vegetation and floral diversity

Ebino Plateau is known for its expansive pampas grasslands and for being a region where plants such as Miyamakirishima and Nokaido grow naturally. Nokaido in particular is said to be the only place in the world where Ebino Plateau is native, and has been designated a national natural monument.

The highlights of these plants change with the seasons, making it the perfect place to enjoy the changing nature from the fresh greenery of early spring to the autumn leaves of early summer.

3. Mountain Routes and Pond Walking Trails

Ebino Plateau is also well-maintained as a trailhead for mountains such as Mt. Karakuni. There is also a course called the Pond Tour Nature Trail, which takes you around multiple ponds, marshes, and moist terrain, allowing you to enjoy the scenery of the four seasons. The terrain is suitable for both trips that focus on plateau walking and trips that incorporate mountain trekking.

4. Surrounding facilities and base of stay

Within the plateau, there are tourist facilities such as the Ebino Eco Museum Center , hotels, souvenir shops, and campsites. These facilities are equipped to support visitors' understanding of nature and their stay, and are suitable not only for day trips but also as a base for overnight stays.

Furthermore, the Ebino Plateau facilities are located in the area that is included in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park and Kirishima Geopark, and are highly valued from the perspective of nature conservation and landscape preservation.
