Nurturing Fruits, Landscapes, and Time - Walking through Kirishima Sakura Fruit Land

Kirishima Sakura Fruit Land (Kirishima Sakurakan) , nestled in the lush nature of Kirishima City, is more than just a tourist farm. It invites visitors into a "story of agriculture and scenery" through a variety of fruit-based experiences, including not only fruit cultivation and harvesting, but also processing, winery brewing, a restaurant, barbecue, and children's play equipment.

This place is designed to be a place where you can enjoy not only the deliciousness of the fruit itself, but also the process of picking, the time spent eating, and interaction with the surrounding scenery. Below, we will introduce its charms, highlights, tips for visiting, and a model experience plan.

The climate and commitment to growing fruit

This farm is located at the foot of the Kirishima Mountains, and takes advantage of its location, blessed with a climate with large temperature differences between day and night, to cultivate a variety of crops, mainly grapes. We also have strong ideas about soil preparation and quality control, such as using groundwater, making our own compost, and considering pesticide-free cultivation.

In 2020, Kagoshima Prefecture's first winery was completed within the premises. The attempt to brew grapes grown within the premises is a commitment that took over 15 years to achieve.

Because this facility, which integrates fruit and winemaking, blends into the landscape, visitors will spend more than just "walking through fruit fields."

Highlights of a variety of experiences

  • Seasonal Fruit Picking Experience: From July to November, you can enjoy multiple fruit picking activities, such as grape picking and autumn fruit picking. Demonstrations are held in greenhouses and fruit is sold by weight, so you pay for what you harvest.

  • Barbecue/Garden BBQ
There is an all-weather greenhouse where you can enjoy barbecues surrounded by greenery, such as under the grape trellis, so you don't have to worry about rain. The restaurant menu includes black pork shabu-shabu, Satsuma cuisine, and set meals, allowing you to enjoy not only fruit but also local flavors.

  • Wine tasting, purchase, and wine brewing viewing: The winery within the school offers a selection of red, white, rosé, and sweet wines made from 100% grapes, some of which can be sampled for around 500 yen. Barrel-aged wines and mini bottles are also available, making them popular souvenirs.

  • There is also a jam-making experience (limited time only, reservation required), so you can enjoy processing the fruit you picked. The Kirishima Sakurakan product center also offers a wide variety of products made with local ingredients, such as pesticide-free lettuce, kumquat dressing, fruit cakes, and smoothies.

  • There is also a play area for children, with play equipment and mini Segway experiences, and it is bustling on sunny days and weekends.

Visitor Tips and Cautions

  • Please note the operating period and times . Fruit picking and garden houses are mainly open from July to October. The souvenir shop and restaurant are open all year round and may open in the evenings (reservations required).

  • Reservations and crowd prevention: Reservations are recommended for barbecues, processing experiences, group visits, etc. It is expected to be crowded during peak times, and fruit picking may run out, so be sure to check the latest information before visiting.

  • How to choose your clothes and shoes: The orchard has dirt, muddy paths, and steps. Choose shoes that are easy to walk in and non-slip, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

  • Check what fruits are available for harvesting The varieties that can be picked change depending on the season and ripeness of the fruit, so checking the website or calling to see what's available for picking that day will help you avoid wasting your time.

  • Please refrain from driving after drinking as there will be wine tasting. If you are coming by car, please arrange for alternative transportation and a return trip.

  • When picking fruit, please be careful not to damage the trees, and take any containers or trash you use with you. Please follow the rules of the gardens and facilities.
