Ogawa Falls

Minami Osumi Town, Kagoshima Prefecture - here you'll find a waterfall that cleanses the soul, where the flowing water and greenery intertwine as it flows from the forest into the sea. This is Ogawa Falls. With a drop of 46 meters and a width of 60 meters, this majestic waterfall continues to fascinate many people with the color of its basin and the harmony with the surrounding nature. With its sparkling emerald-green water, sheer cliffs, and lush green forests, this "natural panorama" is picturesque no matter where you look, and is well worth a visit.
The hidden beauty of Okawa Falls: a glittering emerald green waterfall
As you walk the approximately 1,200-meter promenade from the parking lot to the base of the falls, you'll first be enveloped in the sound of the mountain stream, the rustling of leaves, and the scent of earth and wood. Along the way, you'll come into contact with the spring water seeping from the rock face and take a breather at small rest spots, gradually approaching the falls. The promenade is maintained at a moderate gradient, and the time spent walking while immersed in nature is itself soothing.
When you reach the base of the falls, you will be taken aback by its magnificent appearance. The emerald-clear waters of the basin, the underground water gliding down the walls, and the geological layers carved into the cliffs. The power of the falling water, along with the spray and cool air that spread all around, will sharpen your senses. This spectacle, like a work of art created by nature over a long period of time, is truly a place that will "cleanse your soul."
Furthermore, the waterfall is not just a tourist spot; it is a source of pride for the local people and a reminder of coexistence with nature. The scenery is only possible because the environment is well-maintained, with the murmuring of the stream, the green of the forest, and the clarity of the water. If each visitor walks around with a sense of cherishing this place, it will help preserve this beautiful natural environment for future generations.
A trip to Okawa Falls: access, sightseeing tips and things to know
Access method and travel time
Okawa Falls is located upstream in the Nejime district of Minami Osumi Town, in the southern part of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. The most common way to get there is by car. From Kagoshima Airport, it takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes using the expressway. From Kagoshima City, there is a route that takes around 2 hours, including a ferry. If you are using public transportation, connections are limited, so it is wise to allow yourself plenty of time.
Alternatively, you can take a ferry from a nearby port to Nejime Port and access the area by car. There is a parking lot, so it is convenient for visitors who come by car.
Highlights and Experiences
-
Walking along the promenade : The promenade from the parking lot to the basin of the waterfall (approximately 1,200m) runs along the mountain stream, allowing you to enjoy the sound of the clear stream and the coolness of the shade of the trees. There are also plenty of photo opportunities. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes.
-
Observation point : From the upstream observation point, you can get a bird's-eye view of the entire waterfall, enjoying the contrast between the waterfall falling from afar and the surrounding forest. Meanwhile, from the Okawa Falls Observation Point, closer to the basin, you can experience the spray and power of the waterfall up close, leaving you feeling quietly moved.
-
Best time to take photos : The best time to take photos is when the angle of the light makes the emerald green of the waterfall basin shine even more (morning to midday is recommended). The soft afternoon light also beautifully highlights the shadows of the walls, cliffs, and leaves.
-
The scenery changes with the seasons : Summer brings a deep green and a refreshing feeling, spring and autumn bring more color to the trees, and on sunny winter days the air is so clear that you can see the distant scenery clearly.
