Sakurajima

A magnificent landscape carved into Sakurajima's nature and history

Sakurajima - just hearing the name conjures up images of both the power of a volcano and the grace of an island floating in the sea. This composite volcano, towering across from Kagoshima City, is a place where the majesty of nature and human activity overlap. Whether you're visiting for the first time or multiple times, Sakurajima is full of attractions that will make you want to "see, feel, walk" and experience them all.

A magnificent landscape carved into Sakurajima's nature and history

Sakurajima is a composite volcano made up of two mountains, Kitadake and Minamidake, and is still active today. It stands approximately 1,117 meters high, has a circumference of approximately 52 kilometers, and an area of approximately 80 square kilometers. Over the ages, the forces of nature, such as eruptions, smoke, volcanic ash, and lava flows, have continued to shape the island's topography. In particular, the major eruption in 1914 (Taisho 3) was so severe that it became connected to the Osumi Peninsula, and the sight of the island still billowing smoke and raining ash leaves a strong impression on visitors.

The history of volcanoes is not just a record of "terrifying events," but also evidence of their deep connection to people's lives. At the Sakurajima Visitor Center, you can learn in detail about records of past major eruptions, changes in the terrain, and the mechanisms of volcanic activity, and it is a gateway to understanding Sakurajima's present and future.

The island's natural scenery changes throughout the seasons, offering a delightful sight. Cherry blossoms and wild cherry trees add color in spring, the deep green of summer, autumn leaves in fall, and the mountains occasionally covered in snow in winter. On a clear day, approaching by ferry from Kagoshima city, you can clearly see the outline of Sakurajima, and feel its grandeur as the breeze blows across the sea.

Activities and recommended spots to experience on Sakurajima

The appeal of Sakurajima tourism is not limited to just looking at it. There are many experiences to be had and many spots worth visiting.

First of all, regarding transportation, it's about a 15-minute ferry ride from Kagoshima Port. Even before you arrive, you can enjoy the view of Sakurajima gradually growing in size, and the moment you disembark at Sakurajima Port is the exciting start of your journey.

If you're touring the island, we recommend the Sakurajima Island View sightseeing bus. It efficiently takes you to the main observation points and famous places, and you can enjoy the ever-changing scenery of the lava fields, coastline, and green mountain ranges along the way. Yunohira Observatory is known as the highest point accessible to the public, and is the perfect place to get a panoramic view of Sakurajima. There are also photogenic spots such as Sekisui Observatory Square and "Portrait of a Scream." The site of the all-night concert that Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi held here has been developed, so you can not only see the scenery but also learn about historical episodes.

For those who want to get in touch with nature, there are many places where you can experience the unique topography created by the sea and volcanoes, such as the Lava Beach Promenade and Sea Fishing Park. You can also relax in a foot bath. The coastline formed by Sakurajima's lava and volcanic ash offers a view that cannot be found anywhere else.

The gourmet food and local specialties are also appealing. At the roadside station "Sakurajima Hinoshima Megumikan," you can find a variety of dishes and souvenirs made with local vegetables and fruits, such as Sakurajima small mandarins and Sakurajima radishes. There are also accommodations and hot springs, so you can plan a leisurely trip that will take you far beyond what you can see in one day.

If you're looking for an active trip, there are options such as kayaking and digging hot springs. Sakurajima is the perfect place to experience the sea, mountains, hot springs, history, and culture all in one trip.

Travel tips and things to keep in mind when visiting

If you keep a few things in mind when visiting Sakurajima, your trip will be more comfortable.

  • In case of ashfall, it is a good idea to carry a mask, glasses, spare clothes, etc.

  • Checking ferry times, bus schedules, and observation deck opening hours in advance will help you make the most of your trip.

  • If you choose a sunny day, the view will be great and the photos will look great, but the sun can be strong in the summer, so a hat and sunscreen are essential.
