Shiroyama Park (observation deck and nature trail)

An urban oasis: the nature and history of Shiroyama Park

Shiroyama Park is a small hill 107 meters above sea level that rises in the center of Kagoshima City, and is home to an abundance of nature that makes it hard to believe it's in the city. It's a "treasure trove of nature" where you can see colonies of temperate and subtropical plants, large camphor trees, ferns, coral trees, and more.

There is an observation deck at the top, where you can see a panoramic view of Kagoshima city, Kinko Bay, and Sakurajima. It is a popular photo spot, especially at sunrise and at night.

Shiroyama also has a history as a fierce battlefield during the Seinan War, and even today, historical sites such as the Saigo Cave and the place where Saigo died are scattered here and there. It is a place loved by both locals and tourists as a walking area where nature and history coexist in harmony.

Enjoy the view and strolls - Shiroyama Park Guide and How to Enjoy It

Located in the heart of Kagoshima city, Shiroyama Park (observation deck and nature trail) is a place where you can stretch your legs in search of quiet forests and spectacular views. Although it is not a particularly high peak at 107 meters, it is a place packed with nature, wildlife, history, and scenery, and the more you walk, the more fascinating it becomes.

Shiroyama is located in the center of Kagoshima City, and despite being close to the city, it has a natural forest where camphor trees, ferns, coral trees, and other plants grow naturally. It has well-maintained roads and walking paths, making it easy to walk, and is a popular place for citizens to relax.

There are multiple walking routes, such as the route that starts from Terukuni Shrine, or the route from Iwasaki Valley, where monuments to samurai loyalists line the ground. As you walk, you'll be surrounded by sunlight filtering through the trees, the chirping of birds, and the rustling of the wind, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The nature trail leading to the observation deck is about 2 kilometers long, making it an easy and pleasant walk.

Once you reach the observation deck at the top, you'll be greeted by a panoramic view of Sakurajima towering majestically before your eyes and Kagoshima city stretching across Kinko Bay. You can also see the port scenery with ferries and boats coming and going, and the view bathed in sunlight in the daytime, the warm rays of dusk, and the night view all offer different charms.

Another big attraction of Shiroyama is its historical background. Shiroyama was once the site of a castle, and is remembered as the site of the final battle of the Seinan War. Even today, historical sites such as the "Saigo Cave" and "Saigo's Final Place" are scattered both inside and outside the park, and stopping by during your walk will give you a sense of the era that Kagoshima has lived through.

In addition to strolling around during the day, many people visit in the early morning, at dusk, and at night to take in the view. In the early morning hours, you can capture the silhouette of Sakurajima against the backdrop of the rising sun in the eastern sky, making it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts. At night, the lights of the city and the ridgeline of Sakurajima create a fantastical atmosphere.

Access to Shiroyama Park is also convenient. Take the tram or bus from Kagoshima Chuo Station and get off at the "Shiroyama" bus stop, and the park entrance is right nearby. If you are coming by car, there is a parking lot available, so you can visit with peace of mind as long as you avoid busy times.

Key points to keep in mind when visiting include:

  • If you plan to visit in the morning or evening, you will be able to enjoy the contrast of the scenery and the changes in light, making it easier to take great photos.

  • If you choose a day with good weather, you will have a wider view and will likely be able to see Sakurajima and the bay more clearly.

  • Choose shoes that are easier to walk in than sandals. The walking trails include slopes and pebbles, so wear gear that prioritizes ease of walking.

  • There is a big difference between the shade and the sunlight within the park and on the uphill path, so it is best to bring a hat, sunshade, and drinking water.

  • If you want to enjoy the night view, don't forget to dress warmly as the wind can get quite cold at night.

Shiroyama Park is a "close-by mountain and natural hideaway" that combines scenery, history, and a walking experience. Located just a short walk from the city center, this place will add a touch of greenery and tranquility to your travels.
