Izumi Town, located in the west of Kagoshima Prefecture, is Japan's number one spot for migrating cranes, with over 10,000 birds in attendance at its peak in January. Even if you're not a bird lover, this iconic winter sight in Kagoshima is a must-see!

    Izumi City Crane Observation Center

    Izumi Town, a two-hour drive from central Kagoshima, is Japan's largest crane migration site, where thousands of cranes await you. The main species are the Great White Crane and the Whooping Crane, but if you're lucky, you might also spot the Common Crane and the Sandhill Crane.

    Imuta Pond

    On the way back to central Kagoshima, stop at Imuta Pond to see a variety of winter migratory birds, including mute swans, garganeys, and cormorants. The 60-acre freshwater lake was formed by a volcanic eruption about 300,000 years ago and is now a Ramsar site.
