It was here in Kagoshima that Christianity was first introduced to Japan in the Far East during the Age of Discovery in the 16th century. On this tour, we will explore how Francis Xavier's missionary work was received in Shinto and Buddhist lands, by visiting and comparing the three religious centers.

    Kagoshima St. Xavier Cathedral

    Kagoshima is the place where Christianity was first introduced to Japan in the mid-16th century. This church was built in 1908 as Japan's first full-scale stone cathedral, but was burned down during World War II in 1945. It has since been rebuilt twice. You can learn about why Xavier came to Kagoshima, and the history and current situation of the country after the introduction of Christianity.
