Sakurajima volcanic ash art

Turning everyday volcanic ash into paint
Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, is an active volcano that continues to erupt to this day. Following a major eruption in 1914 (Taisho 3), the lava flow connected the island to the Osumi Peninsula. Its magnificent silhouette floating in Kinko Bay is an integral part of daily life for the people of Kagoshima.
Life in Kagoshima alongside ash
Depending on the wind direction, volcanic ash often falls on Kagoshima City, which is why the weather forecast always includes the wind direction over Sakurajima. A unique local custom in Kagoshima is to collect the ash that accumulates around homes in city-provided "ash disposal bags" (kokuhaibukuro) and leave them at designated collection points within the neighborhood.
Volcanic ash as an art medium

Sakurajima volcanic ash art is created using this ash as a painting medium. The grainy texture created by the ash particles and its natural hues give the artwork a unique depth. Each piece, whether painted on colored paper or canvas, is a one-of-a-kind original.
Adorning your home with Kagoshima

In addition to pieces featuring iconic motifs of Kagoshima such as Sakurajima, camellias, and local animals, there are also works that can be ordered in custom sizes. Why not decorate your room with a piece born from the land of Kagoshima?
