Manatsu no neko | A work of art depicting the "summer atmosphere and a free-spirited cat" painted with Sakurajima volcanic ash
"Manatsu no neko" is a one-of-a-kind artwork painted using volcanic ash from Sakurajima, Kagoshima. I was walking around Sakurajima in the harsh midsummer sun when a cat suddenly appeared. I was captivated by the cat's dignified appearance and carefree demeanor, and expressed it in this work using the unique texture of volcanic ash.
Volcanic ash has extremely fine particles, and the soft, floating shadows and patterns that emerge by chance are fascinating. In this work, the ash's unique roughness and soft shading beautifully bring out the midsummer heat, the shimmering air, and the quiet presence of a cat.
In Japan, cats are considered symbols of freedom, flexibility, and good fortune, and have been loved by many people since ancient times. The sight of a cat emerging as a shadow in the strong midsummer light is somehow mystical, almost like the guardian deity of the island.
By combining the universal motif of cats with volcanic ash art, which is rare even overseas, a unique worldview has been created that attracts many people regardless of nationality.
