Kichou | Symbolic art of "beginnings" and "guidance" drawn with Sakurajima volcanic ash

"Kichou" is a one-of-a-kind artwork painted using volcanic ash from Sakurajima, Kagoshima.
Volcanic ash, a natural material, changes its appearance depending on the fineness of the particles, how they overlap, and humidity, producing unique shades that cannot be reproduced with a brush. In this work, the texture of the ash is utilized to depict a crow that exudes a mysterious presence.

In Japan, the three-legged crow "Yatagarasu" has long been passed down as a "god of guidance." The Yatagarasu is believed to show the way forward and symbolize "signs of progress in a positive direction" in life.

The crow and newly hatched egg depicted in this work represent a sign that something new is about to begin, and are a motif that evokes auspiciousness, just as the title "Good Omen" suggests.
The monochrome world created by the volcanic ash beautifully brings out the quiet strength of the crow and the tension of the moment of beginning.

The combination of globally rare "volcanic ash art" and Japanese folklore has resulted in a work with a story that will resonate strongly with people overseas.

Characteristics of the work

  • A rare art technique using Sakurajima volcanic ash, creating a unique texture with the roughness, shades, and depth that only natural materials can offer.
  • The symbolic crow, reminiscent of the Yatagarasu from Japanese mythology , has been a symbol of good fortune since ancient times as it is believed to guide people in a positive direction.
  • The energy of "beginning" represented by the hatched egg is a story-like composition that carefully depicts the moment when something is about to begin moving.
  • The calm monotone design blends in with the space , and while simple, it has a presence and is easy to display as an interior decoration.
  • A fusion of Japanese culture, natural materials and contemporary art. A rare piece even overseas, with a strong Japanese feel.
