This is a masterpiece of woodcarving art, made with lavish use of the extremely rare Yakusugi cedar, a special natural monument for which new cutting is currently prohibited.
The intricate tree rings, nurtured by the harsh natural environment of Yakushima, appear as beautiful patterns in the folds of Hotei's plump clothing and his protruding, round belly. Using the Ittobori technique, the "patience bag," a symbol of Hotei, and the details of his happy smile are rendered with a rich sense of life.
Yakusugi cedar is also known as "yakusugiso" (meaning "to pass away from misfortune") and is a symbol of longevity and protection from disaster. Its imposing 40cm tall tree exudes a dignified presence, suitable for a tokonoma alcove or entranceway, as a guardian deity watching over the long-lasting prosperity of the home.
